New restaurants pop up in the blink of an eye in DC, but new eatery Cane is worth a second look. Brother and sister chef/owners Peter and Jeanine Prime are natives of Trinidad and Tobago, and bring their rich culture and cuisine to the menu of fried street food and authentic stews. Come with a date to share a Paratha Tiffin Box, soft Indian bread with intensely flavorful curries and chutneys. Other options include plates of coconut lime rice topped with beef stew, grilled oxtail, or deep-fried snapper. And because their island food goes hand in hand with rum, the cocktail menu is filled with a variety of possibilities. The blended cocktails taste like vacation in a glass, or try a flight of bold aged rums, smooth beginner selections, or a dessert flight.
If you’ve ever had the pleasure of traveling to the Caribbean, a meal at Cane will transport you right back to the warm, humid air and relaxed atmosphere of island life. Cane does not take reservations and is open Tuesday through Saturday from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.
